affilinet provides free tool to help website publishers

affilinet, the European performance marketing network, is to launch a tool that enables publishers and advertisers to comply with the EU ePrivacy Directive. The EU Privacy Directive requires website owners to inform and obtain users’ consent to use tracking cookies. The tool enables publishers to easily implement a ‘consent layer’ on their website without the need for prior programming knowledge. The EU ePrivacy Directive, which demands for clear and comprehensive information about the use of tracking measures as well as user consent for tracking, will continue to change the performance marketing industry. In anticipation of the Directive affilinet assembled an expert forum of specialist solicitors, intertrade organisation representatives and figures from across the performance marketing industry. The forum gathers regularly to discuss the ongoing development of the legislation and its implications for everyday business. In these meetings it became evident that advertisers and publishers required an easy to implement tool, which allowed them to conform to the law by informing and gaining consent from their website users to use tracking cookies. affilinet responded by developing the ‘Consent Wizard’, which addresses all the different regulatory requirements across Europe. The tool offers three options to create a JavaScript layer, which can simply be integrated into individual websites. Dr. Dorothea von Wichert-Nick, CEO of affilinet, highlights that the EU ePrivacy Directive is both a challenge and an opportunity for the industry: “Understandably, Internet users are increasingly concerned about what happens to their data online and how their activities on the Internet are tracked. As a market we have to provide users with objective information to answer these questions so that they can make informed decisions for themselves. After all survey evidence shows that providing transparency ultimately results in higher levels of acceptance.”
